Drugs

Drugs should not be advertised and they should not be banned.

These are the two ways of promoting drugs: to advertise them is madness - and so is banning them. We wonder why so many young ones smoke but so far we have failed to stop them seeing their heroes - actors and actresses - smoking on the screen - some having admitted to being bribed to do this by the tobacco industry. For a start we could have censorship warnings "Dangerous cigarette smoking included in this program." Shows featuring cigarette smoking could be removed by censorship from being shown in certain hours when young people are watching in the same way as other offensive material is restricted.

Banning drugs and making them illegal simply creates a market. Drugs which cost very little money overseas can be imported here and sold at a huge profit. This has encouraged thousands of people to become engaged in the trade. The day we make drugs legal, that day will be the last day there will be anyone in the school grounds selling drugs to our children. They won't be there because there won't be any profit for them. The same applies to the huge overseas drug rings which will fold up as far as we are concerned once we legalise all drugs and control them rationally, including taxing them heavily and using the resulting money for saturation t/v anti drug educational advertising; getting the profit ourselves instead of just handing it to the drug rings - and spending our money on education instead of police and jails.

To deal with drugs rationally simply means to have all drugs available through the chemist shops at normal chemist prices. Some could only be available by prescription and maybe by some well thought out rationing restriction. The drugs are worth very little really, so why not sell them at their right price (plus tax) and keep control of them?
